Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- Arrange sliced yams evenly in the baking dish.
- Sprinkle brown sugar and granulated sugar evenly over the yams.
- Dot with butter slices.
- Pour water or orange juice over the top.
- Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt evenly.
- Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes, basting occasionally, until yams are tender and the glaze is thick and syrupy.
- Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Add vanilla extract for extra warmth and depth.
- For a citrus note, use orange or pineapple juice.
- For a crunch, add chopped pecans during the last 10 minutes.
- If sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water or butter before serving.
