Southern Candied Yams

Tender yams baked in a rich, buttery brown sugar glaze with warm spices. A classic Southern side dish that’s sweet, comforting, and perfect for holidays or Sunday dinners.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 lb yams sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar light or dark
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar optional, adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup water or orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Arrange sliced yams evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle brown sugar and granulated sugar evenly over the yams.
  4. Dot with butter slices.
  5. Pour water or orange juice over the top.
  6. Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt evenly.
  7. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes, basting occasionally, until yams are tender and the glaze is thick and syrupy.
  9. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Add vanilla extract for extra warmth and depth.
  • For a citrus note, use orange or pineapple juice.
  • For a crunch, add chopped pecans during the last 10 minutes.
  • If sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water or butter before serving.
